One of my fondest memories is the graham cracker pie my grand-aunt Gertie made. She was my maternal grandmother’s sister. The iconic white haired, plump, chubby-cheeked grandmother image.
I only saw her at the Cecil family reunions (or funerals). Knowing she would be there with that pie made it worth every exhausting, boring minute of those days worth it. I tried for years to find that recipe. It took a fascination with the cooking of Julia Child for me to stumble upon it.
I spent several weeks this past summer (2021) watching replays of the original Julia Child cooking show on Pluto TV. As is my habit, I soon started collecting a few classic cooking tools. The copper bowl is one of them. Then I ordered her recipe book set.
Unlike the movie Julia and Julie, I wasn’t interested in making every recipe in order, in one year. I read through several and when I came to the section on pies there it was! I had to make it. And so I did.
I had every ingredient. The fresh milk, creamy butter, fragrant vanilla, sweet graham crackers, and even some flakey coconut (Wayne loves the coconut!). Best of all, I have the freshest eggs! I mean, really! I would have to reach under the chicken’s bum and grab it before it touches straw to be fresher!
In the video linked below, I walk you through every wonderful step in the process of making a beautiful graham cracker pie, a.k.a. custard pie. From this base you can add coconut flakes, chocolate, or heck even rum to create some scrumptious traditional custard treats. This isn't a box mix, or made with pudding. This is a real, eggs and milk custard pie with graham cracker crust. It isn't a short video either. So, grab some coffee, get comfy, and watch.
If you try it tell me what you think!
