My church is taking donations for the local foodbank. We did it for Thanksgiving and we are doing it again for Christmas. Because I am filling in while we are without a pastor, I did some research on what foodbanks need. Guess what? They need more than canned corn and canned green beans.
If you think about it, people who need the foodbank need things that will help them feed their families. They need the same types of things you and I need, but just shelf stable. So, as you consider a donation to your local foodbank, consider donating things like these:
Canned meats, like tuna, chicken, even SPAM.Powdered milk.
Evaporated milk
Canned fruits like applesauce
Pasta
Peanut butter
Rice
Instant potato
Nuts
Canned stews, and soup
Cereals
Crackers
Herbs and spices
Salt
Pepper
Boxed meals like hamburger or tuna helpers
And other things like those. So, give a little more thought to your donation items. For Thanksgiving I picked up enough things to make a meal for six families. Six cans of tuna, six boxes of tuna helper, six cans of fruit, six one pound bags of rice, packs of gravy mix, and more.
So, it’s the right thing to do. Think it through.
