If you began raising your own chickens for eggs you are probably starting to wonder what to do with them all?
Does this sound familiar? “Oh! I love fresh eggs! Sure, I will buy some.” “I wish I could have chickens. When you start getting eggs let me know.”
“Hey! The hens are laying regularly. Are you ready to buy some eggs?”
“Oh. No. I just bought a bunch at [insert commercial store here].”
Yep. Me, too.
Don’t despair. Here I share with you how to store your eggs in lime-water. Some people call it glassing, but glassing is really a bit different.
You must get the correct form of lime. You need pickling lime. Get it where you buy pickling salt. Get the same brand name. That way you will be sure to get the right stuff.
You need a container. Plastic is an option but personally I’m not a fan of plastic. I worry chemicals may leach into the eggs. You have to be able to cover the eggs with the lime water.
You also need clean fresh eggs. Not store-bought eggs. Not washed eggs. Clean eggs that have not been washed, or scratched. The bloom must be undisturbed. Store-bought eggs have been scrubbed till the bloom is gone.
