We now add Canada to the list of countries our guests call home!
We recently hosted Vincent, a freelance journalist from Ottawa, Qubec, Canada here at Holstein House. He is reporting on politics in the United States. His route takes him through Ohio, West Virginia, and Michigan.
When Vincent arrived he mentioned trying to connect with a local news reporter. It happened that the vice president of news and executive editor was once a guest at Holstein House. I reached out to him to ask if he could speak with Vincent? He agreed and they connected.
Vincent also wanted to visit our state capitol. After a little thought I was able to connect him with an old friend. She is now the deputy chief of staff for at our state House of Delegates. She was thrilled and gave him a little tour of the House gallery.
Coal mines were also of interest to him. Mr. Holstein and I shared our knowledge of the subject, and some of the area history with him. We suggested he visit the Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine, which he did.
Last but not least, he wanted to experience an election day results watch event. I ran for my local House of Delegates seat in 2012 so I knew of the perfect person for him to contact. I secured permission and passed the information on to Vincent.
Sunday being Mother’s Day here in the United States I invited him to join us. He agreed, and the congregation was happy to welcome him. He even received a small begonia as a gift to take to his mother.
When he checked out Monday his schedule was in pace. He was trilled with the connections he made and spoke of hoping for a West Virginia intership next summer.
All -in-all, Vincent stayed four night with us. I hope he comes back during his potential internship!
